Nigeria Just Cut Vehicle Import Duties in Half. Here Is What That Means If You Are Buying From the US.

Something significant happened on July 1, 2026, and if you have been thinking about importing a vehicle from the United States, you need to pay attention.

Nigeria's Federal Government, through the Nigeria Customs Service, officially activated new fiscal policy measures that cut vehicle import duties sharply. The import duty on brand-new vehicles dropped from 20 percent to 10 percent, while the rate on used vehicles fell from 15 percent to 5 percent. That is a 50 percent reduction on both sides. For someone buying a $120,000 Mercedes-Benz S-Class directly from an authorized US dealership, that difference is not rounding error. It is real money.

From where I sit, sourcing vehicles out of Southern California every week, this is one of the most meaningful shifts in Nigerian automotive import policy in years.

The Green Tax: What It Is and Who It Affects

The duty reduction does not come alone. Alongside the lower duties, the Federal Government introduced a Green Tax Surcharge that took effect July 1. Vehicles with engines between 2,000cc and 3,999cc will attract a 2 percent green tax, while vehicles with engines of 4,000cc and above carry a 4 percent surcharge.

So if you are buying a new Mercedes-Benz S580 with its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, the math looks like this: your duty drops by 10 percentage points, and a 4 percent green surcharge is added back. The net result is still a 6 percent reduction from where you were a year ago. On a $150,000 vehicle, that is $9,000 in your pocket.

For Mercedes-Benz GLE buyers, G-Wagon buyers, and anyone else who prefers a serious engine under the hood, the savings are real even after accounting for the surcharge.

It is worth noting that vehicles with engine capacity below 2,000cc, mass transit buses, electric vehicles, and locally manufactured auto components are fully exempt from the Green Tax altogether. If you are in that range, you get the full benefit of the duty reduction with nothing added back.

Why This Matters More Than the Headlines Suggest

Most of the coverage has focused on the duty percentages in isolation. But the people asking the real questions understand that importing a vehicle from the US involves more than just one line item. Beyond import duty, buyers also carry a 7 percent surcharge calculated on the duty, a 15 percent National Automotive Council levy, and 7.5 percent VAT. The total cost picture is layered.

What the new policy does is meaningfully reduce the largest single variable in that calculation, which is the base duty. When you are working with a procurement partner who knows how to accurately calculate your full landed cost before you commit a dollar, that reduction flows through every figure downstream.

That is where precision matters. Guessing at customs duty on a $200,000 vehicle is not a strategy. Getting a VIN-specific clearance estimate from a licensed Lagos clearing agent before any funds move, that is.

The Window Is Open Now

The revised fiscal measures took effect on July 1, 2026, and form part of a broader overhaul of Nigeria's import tariff structure aimed at promoting trade, stimulating economic activity, and reducing the financial burden on importers. The government's own position is that these rates are designed to encourage more Nigerians to import through legitimate channels rather than routing cargo through Cotonou or other neighboring ports.

That policy intent creates a real opportunity for buyers who move with intention and proper documentation on their side.

If you have been watching from the sidelines waiting for the right conditions to bring in a clean-title, authorized-dealer vehicle from the US, those conditions just improved significantly.
